Yogic Sukshma Vyayama

Dhirandra Brahmachari

Yogic Sukshma Vyayamaa is a unique system of exercises not available anywhere in the world, in any other form either in the yogic domain or in the non-yogic, physical or cultural domain.  It is so sensitive, so powerful, so scientific so deep and yet so simple that even a child after crossing the age of ten can easily practice it and derive benefit. The benefits claimed are very great and there are also experiences collaborated by lakhs of disciples of Shri Dhirendra Brahmachari, my own teacher Sri Dikshtulu and my many of my students.  The benefits of Yogic Sukshma Vyayamaa are so great that even without practicing the rest of the aspects of Hatha Yoga such as Asanas it is possible to derive extremely tangible benefits in a very quick manner.

The other beautiful and more important aspect of Yogic Sukshma Vyayamaa is, that it is the only system of exercises in the world where each and every part of the body including Each organ, each joint and each muscle is taken into consideration, and a particular exercise or set of excercises associated with a specific type of breathing in a specific type of position with a specific point of mental concentration is prescribed.

So the Yogic Sukshma Vyayamaa as is implied by the name, is meant for the subtle body or Sukshma Sarira. It is not meant for the gross body or Sthula Sarira.  There is a separate set of exercises for the gross body - Sthula Vyayamaa which succeeds Sukshma Vyayamaa but it is just about half a dozen exercises of gross nature similiar to other gross exercises such as swimming and running or various physical and cultural excercises. Yogic Sukshma Vyayamaa, however, is on a different footing. It is meant for the subtle body of the human being, as per Indian traditional philosophy.  As per the yogic philosophical tradition there are five bodies for every individual - the physical and the subtle: the annamaya sarira, pranamaya sareera, manomaya sareera, vigyanamaya sareera and anandamaya sareera. So, Sukshma Vyayamaa deals with the second level, that is the subtle body or the pranamaya sareera.

Shang Han Lun (On Cold Damage): Translation & Commentaries
by Craig Mitchell, Feng Ye, and Nigel Wiseman

The Shang Han Lun has been a primary treatment theory and practice source for nearly two millenia. Its author, Zhang Zhong Jing, has been named the "Chinese Hippocrates" to highlight the depth and breadth of his contribution to traditional Chinese drug therapy.

This edition features the Chinese text, Pinyin transliteration, and an English translation of the entire Song Dynasty text, the content and textual order most used in Asia. Just as in Chinese language editions, it is fully supplemented with notes and commentaries. The notes describe the clinical symptoms Zhang Zhong Jing associated with the Chinese terms. For example, modern interpretations of a "moderate" pulse often refer to the speed of its beats. The same term, when used in the Shang Han Lun, refers to a pulse that is loose, soft, and harmonious. Such notes provide practitioners with the clinical observations necessary to properly apply the information.

The commentaries further enhance the text's clinical utility by explaining the theoretical and practical foundations behind the lines of text. Because entire bodies of theory and practice can be associated with the terms and expressions used in canonical works like the Shang Han Lun, commentaries have become a standard means of knowledge acquisition for Asian students. The commentaries in this edition serve exactly the same purpose, greatly enhancing its utility. The introductory matter explains the background of the text, the conceptual structure of its contents, and the problems of exegesis. The appendices are designed to assist those studying Chinese and the glossary and the full Pinyin-English index make this an easily accessed reference. MsSVig

The Magician’s Kabbalah Course (Introductory) -  Marcus Katz

Syllabus
Each unit of the course is designed to be studied over a month, with a total of
twelve units taking a year to study in total. Each unit comprises a Reading Paper,
a Revision Sheet, Exercises, and a Booklist. In some units there is supplementary
material including tables, illustrations, diagrams and further revision material.

1. The History and Tradition of the Kabbalah
Our first session gives you an overview of the history and tradition of the
Kabbalah with specific reference to its development through the medieval and
renaissance periods. Its influence and integration via Christian mysticism into the
western mystery schools is also pointed out. These developments are covered in
detail in the reading material, taken from the work, "The Magician's Kabbalah."
The accompanying exercises for this first session encourage you to be able to
draw the Tree of Life, the central glyph of Kabbalah, and begin to perceive the
patterns around you. This ability to change perception and observe underlying
structure is essential to all later exercises in the course.

2. The Four Worlds
The second session of the course moves onto a fundamental idea in
Kabbalah, that of the Four Worlds. Although this is often neglected or deemed
complicated in many texts, here it is simplified and presented as a practical tool
for observing the world. This builds on the first exercises and gives you an
advanced Kabbalistic model in a comprehensible and usable format. You are
given an exercise and supplementary examples of how the Four Worlds model
can be utilised in your everyday life and business. The formula of Paradise is also
given, which is discussed in more detail later in the course.

3. The structure of the Tree of Life
Session Three moves onto examining some core building blocks of
Kabbalah, namely the Hebrew letters, and their relationship to the Tarot cards.
In order to examine these ideas, you are presented with a means of analysing
the names of the Sephiroth and discovering hidden meaning by using the
symbols of the Tarot cards. The idea of the Tree as a fractal system is introduced
to you with regard to the metaphor of the Orchard.

4. The Processes of the Tree of Life
We now come to look at the processes within the Tree of Life, using the
Minor Arcana of the Tarot to illustrate the activity of the Tree through the
Sephiroth. The Court Cards of the Tarot are examined in the light of Elemental
attributions to gain a fundamental understanding of the character types and
energies depicted by these cards.

5. Concepts of Kabbalah
This session deepens our appreciation of the scope of the Kabbalah by
summarising some of the key terminology and concepts of the tradition;
Tzimtzum, Teshuvah, Tikkun, and Kavanah. Further consideration is given to the
process of the the Sephiroth by breaking down a creative act through the stages
of the Sephiroth. The model of Qesheth, the Rainbow is also summarised, which
gives you a means of analysing everyday experience to judge where imbalances
or missing parts may be causing problems, and hence suggest practical
solutions.

6. Concepts of Kabbalah
One specific concept of Kabbalah, Mishna, is analysed in detail for this
Session. In Kabbalah this refers to "repetition," and here we see its application to
a number of forms of meditation. We use a technique of analysis by Tarot cards
through the letters, learnt in an earlier session, to uncover the techniques
underpinning Mishna. This session also provides you an opportunity to review
learning to date by performing Mishna.

7. Tarot on the Tree
In Session Seven we begin to look deeper into the Tree by returning to
the Tarot. We examine the difference between spreads and layouts, and use a
specific layout to uncover hidden patterns in the major Arcana. The three cards
attributed to the paths connecting horizontally across the Tree of Life are
examined in more detail. The work done prior to this in learning to recognise
underlying patterns and emergent properties, combined with the techniques of
using attributions and correspondences will allow you to begin to discover your
own meanings.

8. Interpreting the World, The Letters, and Stories
Session Eight returns to the Hebrew letters and we take further examples
of using the letters for interpretation. We take a diversion into popular culture
and look at a couple of films to introduce again the formula of Paradise and
some specific Gnostic concepts. We look at the Four Worlds as modelling the
path between Learning and Understanding.

9. Kabbalah : Unity and Multiplicity
In this important Session the concept of holographic structure is
introduced with examples, which is also fundamental to many of the ideas
explored in the Magician's Kabbalah. Once that has been appreciated, we begin
to look at the attributions of Gods and Goddesses to the Tree, bearing in mind
the Golden Dawn injunction not to "confuse the hierarchies." You are asked to
use your prior learning to explore the manner in which a chosen correspondence
of Deity to Sephirah illuminates both.

10. Kabbalah : Magical Formulae
Following on from the previous session in which we looked at Gods and
Goddesses, we now come to explore advanced practical magic in the manner of
magical formulae. We begin by examining INRI and LVX and you are given
pointers by which to create your own magickal formulae, for example, the
formula of Amen.

11. The Tree in Everything; Everything in the Tree
In this synthesis of previous sessions, we start to look at being able to see
the Tree in daily life to illuminate the mystical in the mundane. As it is written,
"the light shineth in the darkness, but the darkness comprehendeth it not."

12. The Hebrew Letters and an Introduction to the Soul
To conclude this one-year introductory course, we look at the
development of alphabets generally, and then a specific technique for using the
Hebrew letters by analysis of their full spelling with Tarot attributions. We finish
by a brief introduction to the Soul as seen by Kabbalah and a short but powerful
meditation to synthesize your learning. MsSVig

JUICE Radical Taiji Energetics describes the entire process of generating maximal internal power (qi) through the slow motion martial art of Chinese Taijiquan (T'ai Chi Ch'uan). All aspects of cultivation and deployment of Taiji's spirit energy are described in accessible terms. This book explains that the great past Taiji masters were not pointing at mere physical structure or mechanical principles in their teachings. Rather, they have left us a legacy of ecstatic internal energy methods that are unwrapped, unraveled, and demystified in this book. The presentation is clear, engaging, and profound, and includes working solo, working with a partner, and mastering the Taiji sword. JUICE is an essential companion for anybody from the raw beginner to the long-term veteran practitioner or teacher of Taiji. Which feels better, crack cocaine or Taiji energy? Why is spirit power (not physical structure) Taiji's true engine of mastery? Whether you're a seasoned player or merely Tai-curious, JUICE will hand you the hidden master keys to TAIJI (T'ai Chi Ch'uan) Contents include: The BRUTE level of internal energy; Taiji's MISSING BASIC for universal energy permeation; The ARC OF STEEL for Taiji's Full Body Activation; The SURGE and the STATE; The real purpose and method of Taiji's PUSH-HANDS exercise; The TAILOR'S TOUCH for supreme sensitivity; YINJECTION and YINFUSION for power emission; The SHELL and its SPIKE, SLIDE, SLURP, and NUDGE power concepts; Taiji's energy meta-tool: the Chinese STRAIGHT SWORD; and much more. JUICE isn't a photo-sequence textbook, illustrating a set of dance poses. JUICE doesn't blandly re-parrot the arcane Chinese philosophy from which Taiji emerged. This book lays out the specific mental "settings" that super-charge any style of Taiji and explains how to use Taiji for personal energy cultivation - with effects that anyone can experience immediately. Whether you currently practice Taiji or you're just thinking of getting into it, you should read JUICE before taking another step.

Review By SimoniousPunk

Quote:

Right away this book gets special mention for being one of the better-written books on martial arts out there. The author's style is witty and clever, but never annoying or abrasive. He manages to use clear, breezy language to probe very deep depths into explaining the internal side of Taijiquan -- an art that despite its large international popularity, is still rarely understood (and often done incorrectly) with only a small handful of living masters.

Take note: this book is FUN to read. Many martial arts books can be very dry, like academic history tomes or political memoirs, or else delve too much into personal fantasy or escapist romance. This martial arts book is original, creative, and enjoyable. It references the typical attitudes of hip modern brand marketing, martial arts mysticism and physical pragmatism, but with a knowing wink on top of real substance.

That being said, the book is much more than clever and accessible writing. Substantially, this book is the one to fill in all the missing gaps in your Taijiquan energy work. It may just be a preview for the beginner, but for the intermediate or advanced Taijiquan student, this is a required manual that will boost your internal practice rapidly. In years of serious Taijiquan training, I have never encountered such accessible instructions on using qi (at least within the Taijiquan system itself, there are certainly other systems out there). It is worth the cover price for some of the central chapters alone.

But there's actually more to the package. The author is highly fluent/literate in both Chinese and Japanese, uses his own translations, and even includes as an appendix, a few martial arts treatises on energy from both Chinese and Japanese masters from the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of this stuff I have never seen in English outside of the author's work, and I'm no slouch on the subject. To say the least, this is an awesome addition to what is already a great Taijiquan/martial arts book.

The ONLY thing in the whole book I wondered about, is why Taijiquan is not strongly conveyed as a martial art, especially given Yang Lu-chan's history as a military instructor, and Taijiquan as a military art. I believe there's a good chance that Taijiquan's waning overall quality around the world is that most people do not practice it in that classical sense. That being said, I understand that it is really besides the point of this work, and whether you are a Taijiquan martial artist or a Taijiquan meditative or health enthusiast, the book's content is of serious benefit.

Let me conclude by saying I've met the author briefly and can attest to his high skill level. I am not a student of his, nor do I have anything to gain from recommending his book to others. Yet this is good stuff. It does have the JUICE. It's a focused transmission for practiced Taijiquan players, written by someone who is extremely skilled at Taijiquan, fluent in English, Chinese and Japanese, and on top of all that -- is an intelligent, humorous writer. If you've been doing Taijiquan or martial arts for a while, this is some high culture right here.

Book Description
Publication Date: December 12, 2008 | ISBN-10: 0415480019 | ISBN-13: 978-0415480017 | Edition: 1

This book is a social–scientific interpretation of the 15 centuries-old Hindu and Buddhist traditions of tantra. It is a self-reflexive study, informed by an insider’s empathy and the apprehension of an Indologist-cum-anthropologist who is also a mystic and an initiated practitioner of the cult himself.

Using his personal praxis to inform his research, the author examines three core themes tantra: a ‘holonic’/mandalic individuality that conduces to the mystical experience; a positive valorisation of pleasure and play; and cultural attitudes of gender-mutuality and -complementarity as neatly encapsulated in the icon of Shiva as Ardhanariswara. This analysis —as captured by the tantric mandalas of deities in intimate union who vividly enact the three themes — leads to his compelling metathesis, that of tantra serving as a permanent counterculture within Indic civilisation.

This book should be of interest to those in anthropology, South Asian studies, religious studies, gender studies, psychology, and philosophy, as also the general reader.

Book Description
Publication Date: November 3, 2004 | ISBN-10: 0226424928 | ISBN-13: 978-0226424927 | Edition: 1

There is perhaps no greater constant in religious intuition and experience than the presence of light. In spiritual traditions East and West, light is not only ubiquitous but something that assumes strikingly similar forms in altogether different historical and cultural settings. This study examines light as an aspect of religiously valued experiences and its entailments for mystical theology, philosophy, politics, and religious art.

The essays in this volume make an important contribution to religious studies by proposing that it is misleading to conceive of religious experience in terms of an irreconcilable dichotomy between universality and cultural construction. An esteemed group of contributors, representing the study of Asian and Western religious traditions from a range of disciplinary perspectives, suggests that attention to various forms of divine radiance shows that there is indeed a range of principles that, if not universal, are nevertheless very widely occurring and amenable to fruitful comparative inquiry. What results is a work of enormous scope, demonstrating compelling cross-connections that will be of value to scholars of comparative religions, mysticism, and the relationship between art and the sacred.

In this intriguing volume, there are spells to attract a lover or get rid of him or her, spells for the home, for business (including one for shaking off the office Casanova), for soothing a sleepless child, preventing and curing a toothache, and many more. If you want a raise at the office, don't ask the boss—instead, procure yourself a green candle, a pair of scissors, a pen and some paper, and follow Marc de Pascale's instructions. The author gives the background to the various spells, an explanation of how they work, and a brief history of gypsy superstitions and traditions (for it was from the gypsies in Spain that he first learned most of these spells).

Your shopping list of ingredients for the various spells is not the macabre one of the ancient sorcerer. Most of the items used in working these spells can be bought in an ordinary supermarket or shop. The author adds a warning: when one dabbles in witchcraft, one plays with powerful forces, so it pays to examine one's motives when casting a spell. If you follow the instructions carefully and heed the advice, you can ensure success by some rather unorthodox, but nonetheless enjoyable, methods.

In Sanskrit, Sat Nam Rasayan means "healing through the name", or "profound relaxation within the divine name". It is, then, a form of spiritual healing, but one that does not employ magic or miracles. Sat Nam Rasayan teaches healing through meditation. The healer does not bypass any steps, nor does he interpose in the ebb and flow of events. He meditates, and while meditating, he employs a specific element of the meditating mind, awareness, to melt away the resistance of the person seeking cure.

This updated english translation illustrates the first level of the technique and explains some rudimentary aspects of the second level. In his new introduction, Guru Dev Singh comments on the various developments this ancient healing art has seen in our era of crisis. MsSVig

Warm Disease Theory
by Jian Min Wen, Garry Seifert

In Chinese medicine there are four classics that all serious students are required to study. These include the Classic of Internal Medicine (Nei Jing), Treatise on Cold Damage (Shang Han Lun), Synopsis of the Golden Chamber (Jin Kui Yao Lue), and Warm Disease Theory (Wen Bing Xue). Warm Disease Theory is the most modern of the four classics. Although referred to as a classic, in this context, the term "classic" means an area of classical study rather than a single classical text. Even though there are numerous references to warm diseases in very ancient texts, warm disease was not developed as an independent system until the Qing dynasty. There were several schools of warm disease, dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties, but until the time this text was written there had never been an attempt to integrate their ideas into an overview. The five medical experts who most significantly influenced the development of Warm Disease theory were Wu You Ke, Ye Tian Shi, Xue Sheng Bai, Wu Ju Tong, and Wang Meng Ying.

The first of these, Wu You Ke, lived in the Ming dynasty. He put forward the theory of pestilence qi (li qi) which explained the role of certain infectious factors in the etiology of communicable diseases. His was the first theory to assert that warm pathogens enter the body through the mouth and nose. He published these ideas in his Treatise on Acute Epidemic Warmth (Wen Yi Lun). The other four medical experts all lived and wrote during the Qing dynasty. Dr Ye Tian Shi introduced the theory that warm diseases develop and transmit through four aspects, namely the defense, qi, construction, and blood aspects. His lectures and teachings were edited by his disciples and published in the Treatise on Warm Heat (Wen Re Lun). Xue Sheng Bai concentrated on discussing damp-heat disease factors. He clearly explained that damp-heat usually occurs from a combination of external yang brightness and internal greater yin factors affecting each other. He published his ideas in his Detailed Analysis of Damp-Heat (Shi Re Tiao Bian). Dr Wu Ju Tong expanded on the ideas of Dr Ye Tian Shi by developing a system of differential diagnosis based on the pathological changes in the triple burner. He summarized his findings and published them in his Detailed Analysis of Warm Diseases (Wen Bing Tiao Bian). Dr Wang Meng Ying developed insights on the cause of warm fevers, their symptoms, and their treatment methods, by applying the theories set down in the Classic of Internal Medicine and Treatise on Cold Damage to the views of his renowned contemporaries. He published his ideas in several books, the most important of which is Warm Disease Latitudes and Longitudes (Wen Re Jing Wei).

However, even these great Ming and Qing dynasty doctors of warm disease, on whose works this text is based, only had partial insights; their views were relatively fragmentary. Warm Disease Theory is the first text to integrate the views of every school, the first to undertake a comprehensive discussion of the foundations of warm disease theory and the clinical treatment of warm diseases. It is in fact such a valuable source of theoretical and therapeutic information that it is often considered a modern classic.

The text is arranged in two sections. The first introduces all the basic information about warm disease, including its history, disease causes, pattern identification, and general diagnostic and treatment methods. The second section devotes a separate chapter to each of the different warm diseases. It deals with the disease factors, clinical manifestations, pulses, and treatments in the warm diseases of the four seasons including wind warmth, spring warmth, summerheat warmth, damp warmth, latent summerheat warmth, autumn dryness, and warm toxins. In each of these warm diseases, the disease concepts, etiologies, pathologies, main points of diagnosis and treatment policies are discussed first, then the patterns and treatments of their characteristic disease transformations are explained.
