She had been knocked by Time. She had been rendered lac-erated by her own history. When she came to me she looked like a metalled mug, battered and misshaped, rolling by a huge garbage heap. Yet she had, once upon a time, been my own student, and a brilliant student.
At her earnest commiserations, I was to have stayed the night at her simple lodgings near the Lincoln Heights. But I could not sleep.
She had been outpouring herself. Grief, remorse, at times anger, all the time stoked by earnestness and urgency, but never a whisper of regret or repentance.
Her days of pride and defiance were seemingly over, as were her days of youth, strength, confidence, and beauty. But not grace. Grace still clung to her. That last blessing of ever-kind Nature still showed through her chance smiles, her movements, the different languages she spoke through her still well-kept fingers, her words, postures and attitude towards me. It was the grace of the ruins of Parthenon. She was still very graceful. Even in tears she was worth a second look.
And suddenly she asked.
What makes man go for a guide, a Guru? No. That was easy, very easy. What makes man suddenly taste the bitterness of loneliness, of the feeling of betrayal and emptiness? And at that hour, he extends his hands in the dark for the nearest wall. A prop; a balance; a support. Why?
No. Not even that. False questions cover the right one. There is something in man that suddenly goes empty; and having gone empty, man seeks to fold himself, double, re-double, and gather enough strength for the next confronta-tion.
