In the Paths of the Gods

This series tells the stories of the Greek gods and heroes, vividly narrated by one of today’s greatest storytellers, Sir Peter Ustinov. Filmed in Greece at Mount Olympus, Athens, Delphi, Olympia, and on the islands of Delos and Samathras, these programs retrace the origins of Greek mythology and explain the rivalries between the gods. The programs explore the human search for meaning in the chaotic forces of nature and the universe above, and remind contemporary audiences of the relevance of myths and legends for our own time.

Poseidon: Master of the Seas

The Greeks prayed to Poseidon before embarking on sea journeys. They offered him the first fish caught, called him "the savior," and attributed their naval victory over the Persians to him. In this program, we learn how Poseidon was saved by his mother Rhea, and how he acquired his trident and used it to help his brother Zeus in his struggle against the Titans and Giants. We see some of the places where Poseidon was worshipped and meet characters in several Poseidon stories: Amphitrite, Delphinus, Polyphemus, Demeter, Arion, Pegasus, the Minotaur. We learn why he sided with the Greeks in the Trojan War, and how he punished them for their cruelty to their defeated enemy, causing Homer to write, "Awful is the fate of anyone who invokes the wrath of the gods while sailing the seas."
