Paul Ricoeur - Time and Narrative (Temps et récit) Volume 1 [1 eBook - EPUB] (Philosophy)

$

0

Time and Narrative builds on Paul Ricoeur's earlier analysis, in The Rule of metaphor, of semantic innovation at the level of the sentence. Ricoeur here examines the creation of meaning at the textual level, with narrative rather than metaphor as the ruling concern.

Ricoeur finds a "healthy circle" between time and narrative: time is humanized to the extent that it portrays temporal experience. Ricoeur proposes a theoretical model of this circle using Augustine's theory of time and Aristotle's theory of plot and, further, develops an original thesis of the mimetic function of narrative. He concludes with a comprehensive survey and critique of modern discussions of historical knowledge, understanding, and writing from Aron and Mandelbaum in the late 1930s to the work of the Annales school and that of Anglophone philosophers of history of the 1960s and 1970s.

"This work, in my view, puts the whole problem of narrative, not to mention philosophy of history, on a new and higher plane of discussion."—Hayden White, History and Theory

"Superb. . . . A fine point of entrance into the work of one of the eminent thinkers of the present intellectual age."—Joseph R. Gusfield, Contemporary Sociology

Maurice Merleau-Ponty - Phenomenology of Perception [1 eBook - EPUB & MOBI] (Philosophy)

Challenging and rewarding in equal measure, Phenomenology of Perception is Merleau-Ponty's most famous work. Impressive in both scope and imagination, it uses the example of perception to return the body to the forefront of philosophy for the first time since Plato. Drawing on case studies such as brain-damaged patients from the First World War, Merleau-Ponty brilliantly shows how the body plays a crucial role not only in perception but in speech, sexuality and our relation to others.

George J. Marshall - A Guide to Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception [1 eBook - PDF] (Philosophy)

Amazon review:

"Published in 2008 by Marquette University Press, George Marshall's _A Guide to Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception_ is a welcome addition the corpus of English language existentialist scholarship. Marshall is a long-time professor of continental philosophy at the University of Regina in Canada.

While widely recognized within European philosophy as a leading contributor to existentialism and phenomenology (arguably eclipsed only by Husserl and Heidegger), Merleau-Ponty has been largely overlooked by readers reared in the Anglo-American tradition. Published in 1945 the `Phenomenology of Perception' is Merleau-Ponty's best known work."

"This is a guidebook that is primarily at “the North American reader,” who might find that Merleau-Ponty’s “paragraphs are sometimes too long”. As such, the guidebook assists with the task of translating Merleau-Ponty’s book into a more understandable format. Marshall is clear to point out that the guidebook is not meant as a replacement for the actual reading of  PP, instead, it is meant to assist the first time reader in “undertaking such a reading”. To thisend, the book retains a largely neutral character, with the voice of Marshall and any critical interventions more or less minimal"

Patrick Harpur - Daimonic Reality (2002) [1 Scan OCR - 1 PDF] (Everything Else)

Essential preparatory reading for anyone interested in shamanic journeying, evocation or any work involving the Otherworld and its inhabitants.

'Daimonic Reality' is a sweeping look at strange, otherworldly events in the world around us - UFOs, fairies, phantom animals, visions of the Virgin Mary, alien abductions, and mysterious lights in the sky. But rather than simply listing the events, Patrick Harpur shows how they can all be tied together using his concept of Daimonic Reality.

Starting with a look at the events themselves, Harpur shows how they are connected by using ideas proposed by Carl Jung and the Romantic poets, William Butler Yeats and William Blake. Harpur connects the old-fashioned fairies to the modern occupants of UFOs. He highlights the similarities in sightings of the older Black Dogs, more recent mysterious cats, and Yetis, Yowies, and Bigfoot. Lights in the sky have existed throughout history - once they were seen as witches, now they are UFOs. The ephemeral materializations of Spiritualism's seances have been replaced by tangible crop circles.

And all of them are manifestations of Daimonic Reality.

Maharaj, as his disciples called him, had many devotees, however one of his closest was Jozef Nauwelaerts of Belgium. Before his passing Jozef and Christiana Braes left to the world a film, which takes the viewer on a journey through Bombay, (Mumbai) and the area of Maharaj’s house, along with a 35 minute question and answer session. Jozef passed this film for use to Neti Neti Films in 2004, and since then has been subtitled in English.

This was filmed between 1979 and 1982, using technology available at that time. It was enhanced and restored in as much as possible, by the good people at NetiNeti films. But do not expect blu- ray quality. This looks and feels like footage filmed in late 70's.

It is fully subtitled, and the substance, the quality of both the aesthetic of that time, as an archival look into Bombay and as a transmission of wisdom from a fully enlightened sage - are very much present in this rare footage.

The Hermetic Hour - Gateways Through Stone and Circle [1WebRip - MP3] (Ritual Magic)

Poke Runyon reviews the new book "Gateways Through Stone and Circle" by Frater Ashen Chassan.
The author is a featured call-in guest.

"This book is, in our opinion, the best practical "how to do it" book on traditional Western ceremonial magick in the past 16 years. It is also one of the best "why to do it" books. This is a magical book by a real magician who has studied, lived and mastered the Art. After working his way through the Lemegeton's Goetia and Almadel, he decided to concentrate on Trithemius'"Book of Secret Things" or "The Art of Drawing Spirits into Crystals" from Barrett's "Magus" and make this system of Angelic crystal conjuration his special forte. He built his own equipment -- graphically detailed in the book -- and described all the technical details, rituals and techniques necessary to replicate his experiments. The text is beautifully written in a mature, sophisticated and very readable style."

Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche - Journey Without Goal, the Tantric Wisdom of the Buddha (1981)

Journey Without Goal is based on a series of lectures presented by the Ven. Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, at Naropa Institute during the summer of 1974. Under his guidance, Mrs. Judith Lief, then the Editor-in-Chief at Vajradhatu, began editing the lectures for publication in 1975.

The reader may note that the language in this book is often poetic and evocative. These qualities have been treated as essential rather than incidental aspects of the original lectures, since they express most vividly the awake and brilliant experience of the vajra world.

The vajrayana wisdom that is presented here is powerful and authentic, and will lead to a greater appreciation and understanding of tantric Buddhism.

Excerpt from Introduction:

What is presented here is like a map; it is an entirely different experience to actually make the journey. It requires a guide to make this journey, and as well, we must make the proper preparations: our minds must be tamed and trained through the practice of meditation. Only then can we see the vajra world.
~ Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche

Erle Montaigue - Yang Style Long Form Tai Chi (UN) [VHSRip - 4 AVI] (Taoism)

Source, Erle Montaigue - Yang Cheng Fu long style Taijiquan VHS - cover art unavailable, copies of original VHS cannot be found.

Yang style tai chi is the first style of tai chi to be properly formulated in to forms and one of the most popular styles today. In my opinion it is the most true to the principals of Tai Chi, being that even today after hundreds of years has changed very little, (bar the new short forms) There are those that say they are doing Yang style tai chi, but if it is not true to one of the foundation forms, such as the Yang Lu Chan form or the Yang Cheng fu form, then it is probably not true to Yang style. The newer short forms try their best to look like Tai Chi but in my opinion are just a shell and underneath there is no essence left.

Yang Lu Chan 1799–1872, was the inventor of the old yang style. Old because it is the oldest of the Yang style forms, many regard this as the ultimate Tai Chi form, as it has a perfect balance of slow energy gathering movements and explosive energy releasing movements. It also has a perfect balance of movements on both left and right sides. Some other forms do not have such a perfect balance and have to be done on both left and right sides to get what you would get from the Yang Lu Chan form on one side alone. It is the epitome of what Tai Chi is, a martial/healing art. Unlike other forms which are just for health, the old form also teaches you about deadly Dim-Mak fighting. But still retains the highest healing qualities of all the forms.

Yang Cheng fu 1883–1936, was the inventor of the Yang Chen Fu form, which is also know as the long form because most schools don't teach the Old form so this has become to them the longest form. Yang Cheng Fu changed the old form slightly, taking out the more explosive moves and some of the more strenuous jumps and kicks. This enabled everyone to practice tai chi, including older more frail students. Even though he changed some of these moves, he did it in a way as to not disturb the energy flow and original intent of the form enabling everyone to get the great health benefits of tai chi. After he invented the Yang Cheng fu form he said...

"to change the form any further, would be to ruin what Yang Lu Chan had taken so long to create"

The reason for this is that if too many changes are made to the original Yang style Form then the energy flows are changed too. If you perform movements that go against the body's natural energy flow, you will be doing your health a great damage, by causing blockages to your Qi. This is much more important when getting to the higher levels of tai chi, so if you intend on making tai chi a part of your life and progressing to the higher levels, take care to make sure you are practising one of the two original Yang style forms.

This is the original Yang style Taiji form of Founder Yang Lu-Ch'an. This is where is the modern Tai Chi forms come from. The Old Yang style form as we call it, is still a slow moving form like the modern ones, but unlike them, it still has real martial qualities. With many explosive Fa-jing movements, as well as leaping kicks for your fittness.

Bhrigu Samhita: Predictive Techniques Deciphered 2nd edition (Vedic Astrology)

About the Author:
He got interested in astrology when he was young, did his Jyotishacharya, and has been doing his research in this field for over three decades. His desire and aspiration to share the findings of his research and the new dimensions which can be given to the science of astrology, prompted him to attempt to put details in the form of a book so that the readers can take advantage of the same.

This book, the first of a series, gives an in depth study of the various permutations and
combinations which can result in forecasting events so as to help both the astrologer and the
native in getting to know about the system and principles which the traditional form of astrology does
not clearly bring forth.

Pages: 248

From Wikipedia:
"The Bhrigu Saṃhitā is an astrological (Jyotish) classic attributed to Maharishi Bhrigu during the Vedic period, Treta yuga. It is said that it was compiled by the Sage out of compassion for humanity so that humanity could cope with the pressures of its existence and move towards a more spiritual nature. The Bhrigu Samhita is said to contain predictions on the current and future lives as well as information on the past life. These predictions will be accurate based on the actions (karma) of the questioner." MsSVig

Alexander Studholme - The Origins of Om Manipadme Hum: A Study of the Karandavyuha Sutra [1 eBook - PDF] (Buddhism )

$

Om Manipadme Hum, perhaps the most well-known and most widely used of all Buddhist mantras, lies at the heart of the Tibetan system and is cherished by both laymen and lama alike. This book presents a new interpretation of the meaning of Om Manipadme Hum, and includes a detailed, annotated precis of Karandavyuha Sutra, opening up this important work to a wider audience. The earliest textual source is the Karandavyuha Sutra, which describes both the compassion of Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva whole power the mantra invokes, and the mythical tale of the search and discovery of the mantra. Through a detailed analysis of this sutra, Studholme explores the historical and doctrinal forces behind the appearance of Om Manipadme Hum in India at around the middle of the first millennium c.e. He argues that the Karandavyuha Sutra has close affinities to non-Buddhist puranic literature, and that the conception of Avalokitesvara and his six-syllable mantra is influenced by the conception of the Hindu deity Siva and his five-syllable mantra Namah Sivaya. The Karandavyuha Sutra reflects historical situation in which the Buddhist monastic establishment was coming into contact with Buddhist tantric practitioners, themselves influenced by Saivite practitioners. The late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are known as the Age of Enlightenment, a time of science and reason. But in this illuminating book, Paul Monod reveals the surprising extent to which Newton, Boyle, Locke, and other giants of rational thought and empiricism also embraced the spiritual, the magical, and the occult.

Although public acceptance of occult and magical practices waxed and waned during this period they survived underground, experiencing a considerable revival in the mid-eighteenth century with the rise of new antiestablishment religious denominations. The occult spilled over into politics with the radicalism of the French Revolution and into literature in early Romanticism. Even when official disapproval was at its strongest, the evidence points to a growing audience for occult publications as well as to subversive popular enthusiasm. Ultimately, finds Monod, the occult was not discarded in favor of “reason” but was incorporated into new forms of learning. In that sense, the occult is part of the modern world, not simply a relic of an unenlightened past, and is still with us today. MsSVig

Series: SUNY Series in Western Esoteric Traditions
Paperback: 382 pages
Publisher: State University of New York Press (January 15, 2010)

Delving into the life and work of John Dee, Renaissance mathematician and "conjurer to Queen Elizabeth," György E Szőnyi presents an analysis of Renaissance occultism and its place in the chronology of European cultural history. Culling examples of "magical thinking" from classical, medieval, and Renaissance philosophers, Szőnyi revisits the body of Dee's own scientific and spiritual writings as reflective sources of traditional mysticism. Exploring the intellectual foundations of magic, Szőnyi focuses on the ideology of exaltatio, the glorification or deification of man. He argues that it was the desire for exaltatio that framed and tied together the otherwise varied thoughts and activities of John Dee as well. MsSVig

Back of the Book

The distinguishing feature of all schools of Indian philosophy in general is that these do not remain content with merely enunciating the metaphysical tenets of the particular school, but they also set up the spiritual goal before the seekers, prescribing the modes of spiritual discipline to reach it. Spiritual discipline or Yoga therefore constitutes an inseparable part of the philosophy of every school. This is very true especially in the case of Tantric school. This is very true especially in the case of tantric schools, in which spiritual practices or sadhana kriya dominate. The performance of kriya in the prescribed manner forms an integral part of all texts dealing with Tantra Yoga.

This book opens with an account of the nature, origin and development of Saiva-Sakta Tantras, their classification under different schools, etc. It also sheds light on the principal metaphysical tenets of Saiva and Sakta Tantras, relevant to the study of Tantra-Yoga. The topics covered in this book are the concepts of divine Grace or saktipata, guru and his different kinds, the process of initiation(diksa) and its varieties, mantra's nature and place in sadhana kriya, different modes of spiritual discipline, Kundalini Yoga, the highest spiritual goal, etc.

This book attempts to remove the misconceptions widespread in the academic world about the theory and practice of Tantra Yoga, which have been deliberately kept secret by the practitioners to prevent their misuse by unscrupulous persons.

Dr. Debabrata Sen Sharma, a well-known scholar of Sanskrit and Indian Philosophy and Religion, has spent more than half a century in studying, teaching and writing on the Advaita Shaiva thought of Kashmir. Retired as Professor of Sanskrit and Director of the Institute of Sanskrit and Indological Studies from the Kurukshetra University of Haryana, now settled down in Kolkata, he is devoting all his time to read in depth, write and translate Sanskrit texts on Shaivism. He had the rare privilege of studying abstruse Sanskrit texts on Shaivism and Tantra with Mahamahopadhyaya Dr. Gopinath Kaviraj, an acknowledged authority on Saiva-Sakta Tantras and a spiritual master, for eight long years at Varanasi.

[French translation of the chapters 1-5 of Tantraloka by Abhinavagupta]

So please don't waste your time asking why this is not a pdf file. Instead please contribute a few hours of your time and OCR and proofread the posted book. Thank you. MsSVig
