Originally written in Icelandic in the thirteenth century AD by an anonymous author, The Story of The Volsungs is a legendary saga based on Norse mythology. The epic describes the legendary history and heroic feats of several generations of mythic Viking families and derives from many sources, including preexisting Edda, or heroic poems, Norse legends, historical events, and orally transmitted folklore.

The saga is imbued throughout with themes of power, jealousy, love, vengeance, and fear. Often considered a critical influence on such later works as Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle and J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Story of the Volsungs is a powerful epic that continues to resonate for modern listeners. This edition-which includes excerpts from the Poetic Eddas, one of the sources of The Story of the Volsungs-is the translation by William Morris and Eirikr Magnusson. MsSVig

James Low - Being Guru Rinpoche: A Commentary on Nuden Dorje’s Terma, Vidyadhara Guru Sadhana (Trafford, Canada, 2006)

Being Guru Rinpoche is a translation of a Tibetan ritual text in the Nyingmapa tradition, with commentary. The original is a 'terma' or hidden treasure of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), discovered in the nineteenth century by Nuden Dorje, revealed publicly by Chhimed Rigdzin Rinpoche in the early 1980s.
The transformative process of tantric meditation is illustrated here through the interplay of a traditional ritual text with a modern commentary. This profound method evokes not just an improvement in one's personal qualities but also a fundamental shift in the way one experiences oneself in the world with others. Through symbolic and actual identification with the pure form of Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, we are freed from the hooks of our familiar assumptions and habitual activities. Just as a holiday can take us out of ourselves and lets us see our lives with fresh eyes, so the practice which this book presents, offers us an opportunity to look at ourselves anew, revealing the infinite in the ordinary.

The commentary provides background information contextualizing the practice in relation to Indian culture, Buddhist philosophy and the complexity of modern culture. It shows how the profundity of the Buddhist view is brought into lived experience through opening to the drama of aesthetic engagement.

Three stages of guided meditation are covered. The preliminaries prepare us by linking us with the lineage of practitioners stretching back over a thousand years. The main section describes the development of the mandala of eight forms of Guru Rinpoche as a means of transforming static defensive identity into a responsive flow of emergent possibilities. Being 'reborn' as the deity one experiences the arising and passing of forms within the open space of emptiness which is our true nature. With this primordial spaciousness experienced though divine forms in the mandala we recognize that our own everyday existence has this very

    About the Author
James Low began studying and practicing Tibetan Buddhism in India in the 1960's. He received teachings from Kalu Rinpoche, Chatral Rinpoche, Kanjur Rinpoche and Dudjom Rinpoche. Having met his root teacher, Chhimed Rigdzin Lama (also known as C R Lama), he lived in his home in Bengal for many years, serving him as required and being taught many aspects of the tradition. During this period in India James did several retreats and pilgrimages in the Himalayas. In the 1970's and 1980's, on his return to Europe, he also had teachings and guidance from Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche.
James translated many tantric texts and sadhanas with C R Lama, who wanted texts from the lineages of Byangter and Khordong to be available in English. These were used as practice texts by C R Lama's disciples. Many have since been translated by others into various European languages.

    C. R. Lama asked James to teach in 1976 and later gave him the transmissions necessary to do this, together with full lineage authority.

James is regularly teaching the principles of dzogchen in various places in Europe. He continues to publish translations and commentaries from time to time.

James currently works as a Consultant Psychotherapist in a National Health Service teaching hospital in London and has a private psychotherapy practice. He has taught on many psychotherapy trainings in Britain.

Basho and the Dao - the Zhuangzi and the Transformation of Haikai

    Peipei Qiu

Although haiku is well known throughout the world, few outside Japan are familiar with its precursor, haikai (comic linked verse). Fewer still are aware of the role played by the Chinese Daoist classics in turning haikai into a respected literary art form. Bashô and the Dao examines the haikai poets’ adaptation of Daoist classics, particularly the Zhuangzi, in the seventeenth century and the eventual transformation of haikai from frivolous verse to high poetry. The author analyzes haikai’ s encounter with the Zhuangzi through its intertextual relations with the works of Bashô and other major haikai poets, and also the nature and characteristics of haikai that sustained the Zhuangzi’s relevance to haikai poetic construction. She demonstrates how the haikai poets’ interest in this Daoist work was rooted in the intersection of deconstructing and reconstructing the classical Japanese poetic tradition.
Well versed in both Chinese and Japanese scholarship, Qiu explores the significance of Daoist ideas in Bashô’s and others’ conceptions of haikai. Her method involves an extensive hermeneutic reading of haikai texts, an in-depth analysis of the connection between Chinese and Japanese poetic terminology, and a comparison of Daoist traits in both traditions. The result is a penetrating study of key ideas that have been instrumental in defining and rediscovering the poetic essence of haikai verse.

Bashô and the Dao adds to an increasingly vibrant area of academic inquiry—the complex literary and cultural relations between Japan and China in the early modern era. Researchers and students of East Asian literature, philosophy, and cultural criticism will find this book a valuable contribution to cross-cultural literary studies and comparative aesthetics.

Strange Is Normal: The Amazing Life of Colin Wilson (2010) [1 DVD - VOB]

"The interviewers and creators of this DVD are to be commended for their efforts in weaving together this most cherished account of Colin Wilson..." - Amazon Review (5 Stars)

    YouTube Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PAAIYBKd4Y

    Homepage: http://www.reality-entertainment.com/films/titles/strange-is...

In the early 1950s, Colin Wilson left his school in the north of England with no qualifications and worked at a series of labouring jobs.

To save money, he slept in a sleeping bag on Hampstead Heath and spent his evenings reading literature, science and philosopy in public libraries.

In 1956 he became famous overnight with the publication of his first book, The Outsider, which rocked the literaray establishment and was hailed as a work of genius.

It was a study of the "outsider" in world literature which demonstrated a phenomenal breadth of learning that many critics found astonishing in a grammar school boy with no higher education.

Fifty-seven years on, and never out of print in English, the book's still widely read and discussed, having been translated into over thirty languages.

In the 1970s his work took a new turn with his wide-ranging and original, "Occult Trilogy" - The Occult (1971), Mysteries (1978) and Beyond The Occult (1988). They amounted to a monumental 1600 pages.

Whatever their shortcomings, the books had enormous value in that they covered a vast area of ground and introduced an entire generation to thousands of obscure and not-so-obscure magicians, writers, mystics, psychics, psychologists and philosophers.

Colin Wilson eventually wrote over 150 books and plays (many are on the tracker).

Wilson has a very original and perceptive mind. His prose-style has great clarity and made many dense and obscure matters comprehensible to a general audience.

This film is a tribute to his life and work.

The production values are pretty shoddy with an occasionally shaky camera, off-mic questions from the interviewer and suchlike. Amateur perhaps, but in the literal sense of the word - i.e., a labour of love.

It's aimed primarily at fans, but, as one Amazon reviewer wrote: "The interviewers and creators of this DVD are to be commended for their efforts..."

All the more so, I would add, because sadly, in June 2012, Colin Wilson suffered a massive stroke and lost the ability to speak.

They got there just in time.

The DVD5 is untouched - all menus and extras are included.

    Enjoy! :-)

Tea with Colin Wilson... (5 Stars)

I have been a fan of Colin Wilson since first reading "The Outsider" back in 1977; his writings made a big impact on my life and worldview and since that first purchase I have in my collection over 70 books to Wilson's credit.

I had the pleasure of meeting him in person back in 1990 when he ran a workshop at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY - quite a marvelous occasion.

During that workshop I also purchased a video of an interview that Colin Wilson gave with Jeffrey Mishlove of the Thinking Allowed series, entitled Colin Wilson: The High and the Low.

It was indeed a treat to watch my favorite author again as he gave a most panoramic overview of his lifetime work.

So, coming across this DVD I was eager to watch him yet again.

    I was not disappointed.

This particular interview with Colin Wilson delightfully takes place in the intimate setting of his own home in Cornwall, England; watching an older (he's now 80) Wilson, walking around and sitting in his humble abode and reminiscing about his early life and work, is perhaps my fondest encounter with this intriguing thinker and visionary to date.

At first, it was somewhat distracting listening to Wilson speak while this varied-music soundtrack was incessantly vying for one's attention - but after awhile one grows assumed to it as it somehow seems to add to the full ambiance of the interview.

It was also interesting to watch his wife, Joy - his companion for over 57 years being interviewed at the end of the DVD.

The interviewers and creators of this DVD are to be commended for their efforts in weaving together this most cherished account of Colin Wilson.

    Declarations of the Perfected

Part One: Setting scripts and Images into Motion

    Thomas E. Smith

Declarations of the Perfected is the first complete, annotated translation of the Zhen’gao, Tao Hongjing’s (456-536) masterful compilation of the Shangqing or Higher Clarity revelations, setting the stage for the heyday of medieval Daoism. This volume presents its first part (fasc. 1-4), centering around the practice of achieving “spiritual union,” a spiritual analogue to sexual intercourse, with Perfected partners. The book is the first to examine in depth the full process of this practice—from preliminary courtship to the act of spiritual union itself, the gestation of the Perfected embryo in the body of the adept, and finally the adept’s rebirth.

    A World of Their Own

Daoist Monks and Their Community in Contemporary China

    Adeline Herrou

Following the fate of a small Daoist community temple, the Wengongci in the town of Hanzhong, Shaanxi, the author examines the structure of the temple, the monastics living in it, its surrounding lay community, and the gods worshiped in its confines. In a second part, she outlines the individual’s path as a Daoist monastic today, from the choice of the religious life through the various forms of training to advanced ordinations and activities in the society. Her third part discusses the greater community of the Dao in terms of pseudo-kinship structures and gender issues. The book is full of amazing detail and reliable, on-the-ground information on the actual practice of Daoism in China today. It speaks both with the voices of the monastics and lay followers themselves as well as from the analytical perspective of the anthropologist. A must for anyone interested in the true face of religiosity and spiritual practice in China today.

    Renewing the Covenant:

A Kabbalistic Guide to Jewish Spirituality

    Leonora Leet

A guide to how meditations and principles from the Kabbalah can be used to profoundly renew spiritual practice.

    - Reveals transformational meditations and visualization exercises based on the profoundest truths concealed in the Kabbalah.

The covenant that bound God to the Patriarchs in a special relationship of obligation and empowerment was renewed by God with Israel at Sinai and Moab. Each of these three Jewish covenants can be associated with a particular spiritual practice: the Patriarchal Covenant with Father Isaac's practice of meditation; The Sinai Covenant of Holiness with the observance of the Sabbath required in its Ten Commandments, and the Moab Covenant of Love, comprising the entire Mosaic Torah, with the practice of prayer instituted there. In Renewing the Covenant, Leonora Leet shows how this ladder of increasingly demanding and potent covenantal practices can enable one to ascend to ever higher levels of mystical Judaism.

At this threshold of a new millennium, increasing numbers of people are seeking a more direct connection with the Divine. To aid such a process, Renewing the Covenant provides new paths for entering the treasurehouse of Jewish spirituality and achieving higher consciousness, paths that can deepen the devotions of both nonobservant and traditionally observant Jews. This process of covenant renewal begins with effective kabbalistic techniques of meditation combining mantra with visualization, proceeds through the return to a reconstructed Sinai Sabbath, and arrives at the culminating practice of ritual prayer whose performance can fulfill the kabbalistic purpose of creation. When undertaken in the steps laid out by Dr. Leet, this process can help many to discover forms of spiritual practice precisely tailored for the modern world, as well as a new appreciation for the rich spiritual heritage of Judaism.

A working guide to the proper methods of interacting with the full Vodou pantheon
    • Includes the myths, cultural heritage, and ancestral lineage of the lwa and how to honor and serve them

    • Provides an introduction and guide that is especially useful for the solitary practitioner

    • Discusses the relationship between Vodou, Haitian culture, and Catholicism

In The Haitian Vodou Handbook, Kenaz Filan, an initiate of the Société la Belle Venus, presents a working guide to the proper methods of interacting with the full Vodou pantheon, explaining how to build respectful relationships with the lwa, the spirits honored in Haitian Vodou, and how to transform the fear that often surrounds the Vodou religion.

Until recently, the Haitian practice of Vodou was often identified with devil worship, dark curses, and superstition. Some saw the saint images and the Catholic influences and wrote Vodou off as a “Christian aberration.” Others were appalled by the animal sacrifices and the fact that the Houngans and Mambos charge money for their services. Those who sought Vodou because they believed it could harness “evil” forces were disappointed when their efforts to gain fame, fortune, or romance failed and so abandoned their “voodoo fetishes.” Those who managed to get the attention of the lwa, often received cosmic retaliation for treating the spirits as attack dogs or genies, which only further cemented Vodou’s stereotype as “dangerous.”

Filan offers extensive background information on the featured lwa, including their mythology and ancestral lineage, as well as specific instructions on how to honor and interact fruitfully with those that make themselves accessible. This advice will be especially useful for the solitary practitioner who doesn’t have the personal guidance of a societé available. Filan emphasizes the importance of having a quickened mind that can read the lwa’s desires intuitively in order to avoid establishing dogma-based relationships. This working guide to successful interaction with the full Vodou pantheon also presents the role of Vodou in Haitian culture and explores the symbiotic relationship Vodou has maintained with Catholicism. The lwa--the spirits honored in Haitian Vodou--know that it is far more useful to find out exactly what is causing your money woes rather than receiving a quick fix.

In Vodou Money Magic, Kenaz Filan offers a path to long-lasting and pervasive changes in your financial situation. Filan describes the lwa who govern financial matters and explains what services each can provide in attaining wealth or finding a fulfilling career--and who will likely offer the best wisdom for your needs. If you are having trouble finding a job, Legba’s Perusing the Want Ads spell can resolve this difficulty. If you wish to curb impulse spending, then you should work with the Great Serpent Damballah. If you need emergency financial assistance, Mama Danto is there to help. Filan presents easy-to-follow instructions for numerous financial spells and also reveals how the lwa offer counsel for family burdens, getting along with coworkers, and planning your future. MsSVig

Jamie Assiah - Magick: A Core Practice, Understanding The Journey In Magick

    Book Description
    Publication Date: March 16, 2013

Welcome to the first in the series of A Core Practice.

This book keeps it simple whilst maintaining the true feel for magick and the craft.

Magick: A Core Practice is a journey that leads the seeker back to their personal core of power: The center of transformation, the place magick begins.
Through this journey the seeker is once again brought back to their original creative state: The divine center within them, the level of being that existed in the beginning of their souls journey.
During this exploration the seeker will discover proven techniques which will enable them to master the practice of magick, spell casting, psychic development and mastery, and personal transformation; finally placing the power of their destiny back within their hands.

Magick: A Core Practice is a celebration of the magick of humanity, and mastery of the spiritual elements of all creation.

Magick: A Core Practice offers a simplistic insight into what can often be a complex practice. This part of your journey will see you exposed to the wonder that is Magick delivered from your core.

The insight into magick and spells is very often over analyzed and way too complex.

There is often a feeling of seriousness and complete focus whilst learning new practices in the craft. I personally feel there has to be some fun had with it also.

When W. L. Ham approaches the Nagual Lujan Matus for insight into enigmatic events that have marked his awareness, what he learns revolutionizes everything he thought he knew. Realizing that he has found an authentic guide, Bill enters into a intensive apprenticeship and directly begins to experience the multiplex of luminous interactivity that is our living matrix as never before.

Like countless others, Bill had been galvanized when concepts like ‘the energy double’, ‘dreaming awareness’, and ‘first and second attention’, were introduced in the 1960s. Exploring these fascinating propositions in his own waking and dreaming life, he is faced with discoveries and challenges utterly unaccounted for by conventional definitions of reality. Bill begins faithfully documenting his exchanges with Lujan, and the result is a most extraordinary manual on the crucial yet little understood subject of reclaiming our dimensional sovereignty.

A friendly flow of dialogue belies the gravity of this material, as Lujan deftly elucidates the very fabric of existence with humble yet unequivocal authority. These are no second-hand sorcery tales but genuine revelations from a seer bound by his inevitability to communicate what he knows. Describing the innermost workings of the holographic universe with rare precision, these teachings decode riddles of perception that have long been surrounded with confusion, providing a luminous bridge to our interdimensional potential as human beings.

The sometimes-alarming nature of what Lujan reveals is tempered by the multifaceted affirmation that the key to finding freedom lies in truly applying ourselves to the moment that continually escapes us, guided only by that most precious instrument of divination, our heart.

    About the Author

Lujan Matus is a powerful shaman who at the age of seven was initiated into a lineage of ancient seers and instructed in the parallel realms of dreaming and waking realities. His primary teacher and benefactor was the old nagual Lujan – an oriental shaman – who imparted to him many treasures, including a variety of shamanic practices.

A nagual is a teacher in the shamanic tradition; a guide who assists others to enter into an enhanced awareness and altered perception. Lujan Matus is carrying on in the tradition of his benefactor to assist people all over the world to expand their potential and achieve greater fulfillment in their lives.

Lujan is the author of three books, “The Art of Stalking Parallel Perception“, “Awakening the Third Eye” and “Shadows in the Twilight“. He offers private courses and group workshops in various locations around the world as well as online shamanic tuition.

    Description:

The global approach of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which includes the patient as a whole (like the old Western Hippocratic Tradition), presupposes that mental or psychic symptoms of diseases reflect disorders in the movements of human energy (qi) and of quantities and qualities of Yin-Yang in the relations of organs among themselves and with the surrounding environment. Under this point of view, the treatment of mental illness has already in China with a history dating back to 2,000 years ago and whose development, in the light of the high degree of development of modern science and technology, currently reaches surprising levels in terms of their effectiveness, based on the medical experience gained by countless generations of physicians.

However, the medical literature lacked so far of a work like this, specially dedicated to the management and systematic dissertation about this matter, so that the knowledge in this regard were scattered in various medicine books.

In order to fill this void, Dr. Ye Chenggu, Professor of the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion from the Hospital Guang An Men of Beijing (annex to the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine), provides in this volume for the first time in a methodical way, from their own clinical experiences and the study of Chinese classical and contemporary texts, detailed explanation of the physiology and treatment of the mental symptoms according to the theory and practice of the Acupuncture.
