Edward L. Shaughnessy - I Ching: the Classic of Changes (1997) [1 Scan - PDF] (Taoism)

$

0
For more than two thousand years, the oracular, enigmatic pronouncements of the I Ching (Classic of Changes) have intrigued and inspired readers. In the West, scholars have long regarded the volume as one of the seminal texts of Chinese culture, comparable to the Bible or the Upanishads, and readers everywhere have turned to the hexagrams, line statements, and commentaries for guidance on every imaginable life situation.

Given the enduring importance of this work, it was a momentous event when a significantly different I Ching text was unearthed in Mawangdui, China, in 1973--the first new manuscript of the work to appear in two thousand years. Now translated into English for the first time by one of West's leading scholars of the I Ching, the Mawangdui text brings welcome clarity, accessibility, and novelty to this beloved classic.

Like the received version, the Mawangdui I Ching and its commentaries begin with a central core of sixty-four hexagrams, but in an important departure, the hexagrams in the newly discovered text are arranged in a systematic and logical way and, in many cases, are assigned different names. The line statements that accompany the hexagrams frequently differ from the received text. In addition, the Mawangdui version contains five new commentaries that had been lost for more than two thousand years, including the surprising discovery of a commentary that quotes Confucius extensively on how he had come to change his earlier, negative, views about the importance of the I Ching.

The new material, the logical arrangement of the hexagrams, the more Taoist tone of the "Appended Judgments", the illuminating introduction and notes by Edward L. Shaughnessy and, above all, the lucid purity of his translation, make the Mawangdui I Ching a treasure. Readers who wish to use the hexagrams for divination will find this version more intriguing than even the previous text; scholars will derive new insights from the Mawangdui commentaries and from the "Appended Judgments," one of the most sophisticated and subtle essays in all of Chinese philosophy; admirers of world literature will cherish this volume as a work of timeless artistry. Daskalos (Stylianos Atteshlis) - Labyrinths (1990s) [TapeRip - 4 MP3]

Duration: 2 hours 44 minutes

What is life?
What is the cosmos?
What are the archangels?
What is the true name of each thing that exists?
What is matter?
What is a human being?
What is God?

These are some of the weighty questions that Daskalos addresses in this two-part talk that was given on successive days sometime in the 1990s.

The location was the Stoa - a small lecture hall and garden full of olive trees and cacti at the back of his house in Strovolos, Cyprus.

He explains why everything is alive and death does not exist and discusses how the "petty time-and-place self" is reflected in the three mirrors of matter - our material body, emotions and feelings - and lost in the labyrinth of illusions that they generate.

"The stones are alive, the sand is alive, crystals are alive", Daskslaos tells us and he asks: "How can we understand these kinds of life?".

Try to tune into the vibrations of Daskalos's voice and listen with your heart as well as with your head.

Really, the idea is to tune into the elemental of the talk, which exists eternally and contains the full meaning of Daskalos's teaching.

Much knowledge and understanding can come in this way.

Daskalos

Dr. Stylianos Atteshlis, better known as "Daskalos", (Greek for "teacher"), was a great Greek Cypriot Christian mystic and healer.

That's my assessment, not his.

He had no patience with anyone who wanted to call him "Master", insisting that he was no more than a fellow student of the mysteries.

Nor did he ever insist that he alone knew the truth. On the contrary, he advised his students to investigate everything for themselves and never to accept anything as true merely because he said so.

He also encouraged them to explore other religions and philosophies if they felt so inclined.

Buddhists, Jews, Muslims and even atheists attended his talks (he once said that he could have a more honest and sensible discussion with a sincere atheist than with a religious fanatic).

Professor Kyriacos Markides of Maine University has written a trilogy of excellent books about Daskalos's extraordinary life and teachings.

Although Daskalos only really approved of the first volume - The Magus of Strovolos - all three contain invaluable insights into his uniquely profound and coherent metaphysical system.

I recommend, The Magus of Strovolos, as a way into Daskalos's thought, (although he disliked being called a "magus" and preferred the term "mystic").

It's on the tracker here:

http://theoccult.bz/details.php?id=31429

Most English translations of his own writings leave much to be desired, although a new, professionally translated collection of his talks, Words of Truth, is excellent.

The Esoteric Practice, also contains many simple but powerful practical exercises. It's on the tracker too:

http://theoccult.bz/details.php?id=43653

For me, Daskalos's teachings represent the most profound and transformative system of knowledge that I've ever encountered in several decades of spiritual search that began with Kabbalism and progressed, through Zen Buddhism, to pure mysticism.

There's a saying in Western magic that: "All magicians become mystics in the end".

My own experience certainly bears this out.

In my teens I wanted to use magic to manipulate the world to suit my own ends.

Now I understand that what I really wanted was to change the way I felt inside.

I thought I could achieve that through manipulating the world, but it's so much simpler and more effective to work directly on one's consciousness, which is the whole point of mysticism - to exchange separation and insecurity for what Daskalos called "at-one-ment" or Theosis.

Daskalos has a somewhat unusual style of delivery which takes a little getting used to, but it's well worth the effort as much of the material here is not available elsewhere, to the best of my knowledge.

A website called: The Researchers of Truth, is run by some of Daskslos's students here:

http://www.researchersoftruth.org/

It contains many transcripts of his talks and much else besides.

ANIMAL PRESENCES
The James Hillman Uniform Edition Vol. 9

SUBJECT: Archetypal Psychology

A fascinating testament to Hillman's decades-long interest in animal images in dreams and the psychic imagination, this volume includes the major Eranos lecture "The Animal Kingdom in the Human Dream," and Hillman's contributions to the out-of-print "bestiary" Dream Animals (with Margot McLean), as well as the essays "Going Bugs"; "Nature in the Doghouse"; "The Elephant in the Garden of Eden"; "Imagination is Bull"; and shorter interviews and penetrating conversations on the animal theme.

Quote:

"Hillman encourages us not to turn our animal visitors into "dream symbols" because in so doing we lose the animal. Instead, he proposes, we should recognize it as real, as choosing to come to us from the great unconscious. He suggests that we honor the animal for being present by asking it why it appeared in the dream.  "What is the animal offering you by coming into your life in the dream?" He asks whether animals may be trying to communicate with us in order to stop their exploitation and extinction.  Hillman feels that exploration of our psychic and dream animal presences can help reestablish our severed kinship with the natural world. "

James Legge - The I Ching (1899) [1 eBook - PDF] (Taoism)

The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is the most widely read of the five Chinese Classics. The book was traditionally written by the legendary Chinese Emperor Fu Hsi (2953-2838 B.C.). It is possible that the the I Ching originated from a prehistoric divination technique which dates back as far as 5000 B.C. Thus it may be the oldest text at this site. Futher commentaries were added by King Wen and the Duke of Chou in the eleventh century B.C.

An I Ching interpretation is performed by making six binary decisions (a hexagram). This is called 'casting the I Ching'. These are written down as a stack of six solid or broken lines. This was traditionally done either by tossing yarrow stalks or coins, although there is no reason why the hexagrams can't be generated by some other means (such as a computer program).

There are actually four possible values for each of the lines; the two on/off values, and a line which changes from on to off or vice versa. Thus one cast of the I Ching can generate two different hexagrams, which adds depth to the interpretation. The sophistication of this method has not escaped modern interpretation, and the four-valued logic has been compared to the biochemistry of DNA amino acids. How a Neolithic shamans' divination technique presaged the basic logic of the human genome is one of the ageless mysteries.

Production Notes: This is a complete overhaul of the Legge I Ching etext, with all of the original illustrations. This utilizes Unicode characters throughout to represent the 'short A' and the 'Yodh' found in the original book. Because not all browsers support the official Unicode 'Yodh' (Ȝ and ȝ), we have used Ž and ž to represent it. In addition, we have used images to present the dozen or so Chinese characters in this text. MsSVig

Higher Balance Institute - Eric J. Pepin - 3 Meditation Secrets (2011)

Quote:

Most people associate this in meditation with the monkey brain, babbler, mind chatter etc. It is when you are attempting to meditate and remain silent within your mind, and thoughts of doing laundry, paying bills and an assortment of other things intrude your mind distracting you from your goal of non-thought. All forms of meditation make this a precedence to achieve inner silence. Once inner silence is achieved nirvana is believed to follow. Unfortunately, this is also a very commercialized concept and largely misleading through commercialization of meditation to westerners.

Fulcanelli - O Mistério das Catedrais (Portuguese) [1 ebook - 1 pdf] (Alchemy)

$

In 1926 the fabled alchemist Fulcanelli left his remarkable manuscript concerning the Hermetic Study of Gothic Cathedral Construction with a student. He than disappeared. The book decodes the symbology found upon and within the Gothic Cathedrals of Europe which have openly displayed the secrets of alchemy for 700 years.

Preface to Mystery of the Cathedrals

For a disciple it is an ungrateful and difficult task to introduce a work written by his own Master. It is, therefore, not my intention to analyse here Le Mystere des Cathedrales, nor to underline its high tone and its profound teaching. I most humbly acknowledge my incapacity and prefer to give the reader the task of evaluating it and the Brothers of Heliopolis the pleasure of receiving this synthesis made so superbly by one themselves. Time and truth will do the rest.

For a long time now the author of this book has not been among us. The man has disappeared and I cannot without sorrow recall the image of this industrious and wise Master, to whom I owe all while lamenting that he should so soon have departed. His numerous friends, those unknown brothers who hoped to obtain from him the solution to the mysterious Verbum dimissium (missing Word), will join me in lamenting his loss.

Having reached the pinnacle of knowledge, could he refuse to obey the demands of Destiny? No man is a prophet in his own country. Perhaps the old saying gives the occult reason for the convulsion produced in the solitary and studious life of the philosopher by the flash of Revelation. Under the influence of that divine flame, the former man is entirely consumed. Name, family, native land, and all the illusions, all the errors, all the vanities fall to dust. And, like the phoenix of the poets, a new personality is reborn from the ashes. That, at least, is how the philosophic Tradition would have it.

My Master knew this. He disappeared when the fatal hour struck, when the Sign was accomplished. Who, then, would dare to set himself above the Law? As for me, in spite of the anguish of a painful but inevitable separation, I would act no differently myself if I were to experience today that joyful event, which forces the Adept to flee from the homage of the world.

Fulcanelli is no more. But we have at least this consolation, that his thought remains, warm and vital, enshrined forever in these pages.

Thanks to him, the Gothic cathedral has yielded up its secret. And it is not without surprise and emotion that we learn how our ancestors fashioned the first stone of its foundations, that dazzling gem, more precious than gold itself, on which Jesus built his Church. All Truth, all Philosophy and all Religion rest on this unique and sacred Stone. Many people, inflated with presumption, believe themselves capable of fashioning it; yet how rare are the elect, those who are sufficiently simple, learned and skilful to the complete the task!

But that is of little importance. It is enough for us to know that the wonders of the Middle Ages hold the same positive truth, the same scientific basis as the pyramids of Egypt, the temples of Greece, the Roman catacombs and the Byzantine basilicas.

This is the overall theme of Fulcanelli’s book.

Reality Shifts: When Consciousness Changes the Physical World

Have you noticed things mysteriously move around? Keys don't stay put, wallets transport to different places, and socks go missing from the laundry. We observe reality shifts when things appear, disappear, transform or transport and when we experience changes in time. Reality shifts range from the sublime (missing socks and synchronicity) to completely astonishing (the dead seen alive again; objects appearing out of thin air; spontaneous remission; traveling far in a very short time). Learn how to live lucidly to create a life you love, positively influence the future and the past, and transform sabotage into strength.

a review from the dust cover:

"Modern science has now addressed the problem of consciousness. We each experience consciousness every day, in some of the myriad and fascinating ways described in REALITY SHIFTS. But no one yet quite understands why this is so. Speculations, theories and experiments from quantum science have now been entered into the debate which suggest that our world is far more mystical, complex, interactive and even humorous than the sterile, mechanistic dogma of classical scientific thought. Read, enjoy, be amazed, ponder REALITY SHIFTS."

Originally written in English, this book gives an academic introduction to the basic theory and practice of traditional Chinese internal medicine. It is intended for overseas medical practitioners as well as those who are interested in traditional Chinese medicine, and uses modern research to explain traditional Chinese medicine's approach to diagnosis and treatment in internal medicine.

The book's general introduction stresses the basic ideas of internal medicine in traditional Chinese medicine, general principles for making diagnoses and administering treatments as well as diagnostic rules commonly used in internal medicine. Basic ideas covered include yin and yang, zang and fu organs and pathogeny and pathology. The authors put these ideas into the contexts of both classical definitions and modern scientific research.

Subsequent chapters individually deal with common diseases and their pathogeny and pathology, differentiation and treatment as well as the modern research conducted on the efficacy of various treatments. These treatments include herbal prescriptions and other effective methods, such as acupuncture and moxibustion, with priority given to the highly effective, ready-made ones. Diseases treated in these chapters include: cold, bronchitis, bronchial asthma, congestive heart failure, shock, myocarditis, coronary heart disease, arrhythmia, hypertension, peptic ulcer, chronic gastritis, chronic colitis, viral hepatitis, cholecystitis, cholelithiasis, pancreatitis, aplastic anemia, leukemia, thrombocytopenic purpura, thyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and tumour.

The appendix includes a brief introduction to commonly used traditional prescriptions.
